The Origin of the 'Phantoms' Name
On the 7th May 1969, No. 6 Squadron became the first RAF Phantom squadron, when it was re-formed at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.
The UK variant of the American aircraft could hit speeds up to 1,386 mph. The aircraft was often armed with four AIM-9 Sidewinder AAMs, four AIM-7 Sparrow or Skyflash AAMs, 1 SUU-23/A Cannon Pod as well as various bombs & rockets.
On 23 June 2014, No. 6 Squadron relocated to RAF Lossiemouth, where the continue to reside today. The Phantom jets may have been replaced, but their memory lives on within the RAF.
